Outreach Volunteer

About mRelief

mRelief provides an easy-to-use platform online and through SMS that enables Americans to find out if they qualify for SNAP. Our mission is to restore dignity by transforming access to social services. mRelief has connected over 230,000 families to social services.

Our supporters include Google, Microsoft, and Twilio. mRelief has been backed by Y Combinator, the Knight Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. Our clients include the California Department of Social Services, Yolo County, City of Anchorage Alaska, and the Catholic Charities.

Description

In the United States, more than $13 billion in SNAP benefits (food stamps) go unclaimed each year because potential recipients don’t realize they are eligible for the program or have difficulty applying. mRelief has just launched an end-to-end enrollment process in San Francisco and Yolo counties that allows users to complete a quick, 10-minute application, schedule an interview within two days of applying, and determine the documents they need to submit to be approved.

We are looking for volunteers to help us reach out to potential applicants who are eligible for the program. This position involves calling users to inform them of their eligibility and completing applications over the phone. Potential applicants could include low-income seniors, single parents, college students and individuals experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers will be able to directly impact the ability of food-insecure families to put food on the table and will see how civic technology can be deployed to facilitate access to social services. Volunteer shifts will be 3 hours a week at mRelief’s office in the Loop. We will provide training, support, and snacks. This is an unpaid position.

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable using the phone, with a friendly, helpful phone manner
  • Experience interacting with people from all walks of life
  • Commitment to mRelief’s values of Empathy, Privacy, Accessibility and Delivery
  • Interest in learning more about the SNAP program and/or civic tech

If interested, please reach out by email to support@mrelief.com with a brief paragraph about your background, availability, and interest in volunteering with mRelief.

CalFresh Ambassador Program

Who We Are

mRelief is a nonprofit building a movement of people who believe that food is a human right. We have built an easy-to-use platform on web and text messaging for low-income Americans to find out if the qualify and enroll end-to-end in CalFresh. In doing so, we hope to address the 48 percent of students who are food insecure on campus. We are convening young CalFresh ambassadors at UC Davis to leverage their expertise on the CalFresh program, lead outreach initiatives to ensure students approved for work study are accessing CalFresh, serve as authorized representatives (read: advocates) for their fellow students, and do teach-ins on the rights of low-income students to meet their basic food needs with dignity and affirmation.

What We Value

  • Empathy - We strive to practice empathy and provide a judgement free environment where people are heard and treated with respect.
  • Privacy - Everyone in need should be able to identify what resources are available to them by giving minimal information on a secure platform.
  • Accessibility - We do not take internet access, or device type / platform / medium for granted and develop features for all levels of internet speed.
  • Delivery - We strive to deliver public support quickly and simply, in the least stressful way.

Our Vision

Our vision is to enable anyone to access the social safety net without it adding to the already stressful circumstance of poverty.

Who can be a CalFresh Ambassador?

Anyone who believes that survival matters and that America should be a place where everyone can meet their basic food needs.
